Pets on board

If you want to bring your pet with you on your next flight, you can use the cabin transportation or cargo transportation service, depending on the case.

Keep the following recommendations in mind when travelling with your best friend:

  • If you are travelling from Bogota, please remember to request the service at least 48 hours before the flight.

  • This service is not applicable for reservations with partner airlines and/or codeshare; it applies exclusively between Taca Internacional, Lacsa, Taca Perú, Avianca and Aerogal.​

  • Remember you must provide the container for your pet’s transportation.​

  • Check ​the health permits and regulations required the laws of the departure country as well as of the arrival country.

What to Keep in Mind

  • ​​​​We accept cats and dogs.

  • The service rate applies exclusively by route.​

  • You can travel with your pet as carry-on baggage as long as there is enough space to fit the pet container under the seat in front of yours.

  • The service applies for flights within Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and international flights.

  • Remember that the service rate varies depending on the departure and arrival country or countries. If you purchased your ticket at the super promo fare​ for flights within Colombia and/or to Central America the cost of the service is double.

  • Request the service through our call center at the time of reservation and up to 24 hours before the flight’s departure, as there is a limit of allowed pets per aircraft.

  • You must furnish the carrier to transport your pet. In case you don't have one, we've carriers for sale, subject to availability. Right now we don't have carriers for sale in domestic flights within Ecuador.

  • We accept only one bag and one pet inside the cabin per Passenger, always complying with the corresponding indications.​​​

Flights within Colombia

  • Travel with dogs, cats and small birds.

  • Dogs and cats only require the vaccination card.

Travel to international destinations from Colombia

  • ​You must have a Health Inspection Certificate issued by the ICA (Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario - Colombian Agricultural Institute) for your pet.

Service restrictions​

  • Only applicable to flights that connect with TACA, Lacsa or Avianca.​

  • The pet must remain inside the container through all of the flight’s stages.

  • The service is not available for transoceanic routes.

  • The service is not available for flights from and to London due to restrictions of the Animal Reception Centre.

  • Cats and dogs of under 8 weeks of age are not accepted, as their size makes them more prone to dehydration during the transport. Please keep in mind that the minimum required number of weeks of age allowed for the entry to a given country may vary according to regulation set at the destination. Therefore, we suggest researching all of this information beforehand.

  • By resolution of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Barbados, the transportation of pets as baggage to Barbados is prohibited. Where a dog or a cat is travelling to Barbados, it must travel as checked baggage and the customs procedure must be completed upon arrival, where the pet will be examined in the Animal Control Center and approved to enter the country.​

Flights within Colombia and Ecuador​

  • We accept cats, dogs and fighting cocks (although bird transportation services are not available to the interior of Ecuador).
  • Your pet’s weight shall not exceed 20Kg (not including the container’s weight).
  • Pets in the cargo hold may only be transported in national, international and connection routes of a duration equal to or lesser than three (3) hours.
  • If your itinerary includes connections or more than one flight to arrive to your destination, each one of them shall never exceed a total duration of three (3) hours.
  • For flights operated by A330 and B787 aircrafts, we shall accept pets of a weight of up to 46kg (container included) and there is no flight time restrictions.
  • Costs for the service vary depending on the destination. If you purchased your ticket in super promo rates for flights to the interior of Colombia and/or to the interior of Central America, the costs of the service doubles.
  • All races considered aggressive and of a height of 35cm or more shall travel in the cargo hold inside a metallic container. The allowed races considered aggressive are American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, Canary Mastiff, Doberman, Argentine Mastiff, Bordeaux Mastiff, Brazilian Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, Pitbull Terrier, Rottweiler, and Japanese Mastif.
  • Any pet with a height equal to or higher than 35cm shall not require use of a muzzle, with exception to those of races considered as aggressive. You may obtain more information on aggressive races at the Travel Permits tab.






Flights to and from Europe
  • ​​The service is not available for flights from and to London due to restrictions of the Animal Reception Centre.
  • Your pet’s weight shall not exceed 20Kg (not including the container’s weight).
  • Pets in the cargo hold may only be transported in national, international and connection routes of a duration equal to or lesser than three (3) hours.
  • If your itinerary includes connections or more than one flight to arrive to your destination, each one of them shall never exceed a total duration of three (3) hours.
  • For flights operated by A330 and B787 aircrafts,  we shall accept pets of a weight of up to 46kg (container included) and there is no flight time restrictions.​




​Flights in the rest of the world​

  • We accept cats and dogs, but the following restrictions apply: 

  • The service is not available in routes operated by Embraer. 

  • Your pet’s weight shall not exceed 20Kg (not including the container’s weight).

  • Pets in the hold may only be transported in national, international and connection routes of a duration equal to or lesser than three (3) hours.

  • For flights operated by A330 and B787 aircrafts, we shall accept pets of a weight of up to 46kg (container included) and there is no flight time restrictions.

  • Pets in the cargo hold may only be transported in national, international and connection routes of a duration equal to or lesser than three (3) hours.

  • Due to regulation in the islands of Aruba and Curacao, entry of pets and foodstuffs is forbidden. Said restriction does not apply for fighting cocks.

  • Cats and dogs of under 8 weeks of age are not accepted, as their size makes them more prone to dehydration during the transport. Please keep in mind that the minimum required number of weeks of age allowed for the entry to a given country may vary according to regulation set at the destination. Therefore, we suggest researching all of this information beforehand.

  • There can only be one animal per each container.

  • The containers size must be one that naturally allows the pet to stand in its normal position, turn around and lie down with ease at any given time.

If traveling with dogs and cats
  • For travel to international destinations from Colombia you only need to show the vaccination card of yout pet.​

  • Present your pet for proper inspection.

  • All pets (dogs and cats) over 4 months who wish to enter Porlamar (Margarita Island), must present a rabies vaccination certificate issued by a veterinaria​​n that is valid for one year.​



If traveling with birds
  • The Internal Transportation Guide issued by the ICA at its offices in Colombian airports is required.​

  • Live exotic birds or endangered species are not accepted for transport either as baggage in the cabin or hold.​​



If you are traveling to international destinations

  • When flying to international destinations you must comply with the specific requirements of each country. You must attach the Health Inspection Certificate issued by the agricultural authority in the country of origin that can only be issued with an animal health certificate issued by a veterinarian (original and copy) which must include the breed, sex and age of the animal, together with a photocopy  of the valid vaccination card according to the age and breed of the animal.​

  • Validity of the Health Inspection Certificate varies according to country. The Colombian ICA is valid for 24 hours.​

If you are traveling to Panama

  • You must show a transportation certificate issued by the health authority in the place of origin, authenticated by the Consul of Panama in the country of origin. 

  • The Quarantine Department of Panama, which is in charge of controlling the entry of pets to the country, is open at Tocumen airport Monday to Friday. On Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays they can accept pets, however, passengers must contact a veterinarian from the Quarantine Department to go to the airport at a cost of USD 100 (COP 200.000). If for whatever reason, you cannot pay the USD 100, you must leave the pet in the Quarantine Department until the veterinarian returns on Monday to carry out the procedure to allow the pet entry to Panama.

Special conditions 

For the safety of your pet, brachycephalic dog and cat breeds (short-nosed) are not allowed, because they might suffocate and have breathing problems when exposed to stress or heat.

Legal restrictions by breed.

According to Article 108-E of Chapter XIII of Law 746 of July 19th, 2002, given the high danger level, "the importation of Staffordshire Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers or of canines that are the product of cross-breeding/hybrids of these breeds is prohibited into Colombian territory. " If the pet was born in Colombia, it can be taken out of the country, as long as the owner processes the corresponding permit allowing it enter again. The transport of pets is regulated by Circular Letter 02-005 NPV of July 12, 2002, NPV 05-020 of April 11th, 2005 and the NPV 06-018 of March 24th, 2006, issued by the Division of Flight Standards and Procedures . ​​​​​


Service and Emotional Support Animals

 
  • Accepts dogs as Service or Emotional Support Animals.
  • Arrive 3 hours prior to the scheduled flight departure. Listen to all the flight announcements about the status of the flight made by the Airline to avoid any issues.
  • Have all the legal and immigration documents at hand so they can be presented on request*, including, where necessary, the medical certificate.
  • Inform us of any permitted support equipment/device you want to transport in the aircraft hold.

*At the check-in counter, security and other controls, boarding gate, in-flight.

 
Support dogs

Guide or support dogs

 

Animals that are specially trained to accompany persons with disabilities are allowed without a case in the cabin, as long as their master is in full control of them at all times.

These animals do not count as live animal transport. It is understood that these animals are trained to carry out their physiological needs at determined times and places.

Passengers don't have to pay an additional charge for the transport and weight of their guide dog as they are counted as part of their baggage allowance. There is no limit to the number of guide or support dogs allowed in the cabin.​

Emotional Support Dogs

You must present documentation from a mental health professional justifying your need to travel with an emotional support animal. The date of issue of this document must be less than a year before the flight departure date.

Due to safety restrictions, if you are traveling with a support animal you cannot sit in a seat located in emergency exit row.

Search and Rescue dogs




Search and Rescue dogs (K, B Y R)

Search and rescue dogs can travel when identified by breastplate, microchip and certificate. They can travel in the cabin at the feet of their guide if they have been properly identified and are wearing their uniform. The dog must also wear a collar and a double leash. These animals are not classified as 'live animal transport'.
