Take one carry-on baggage with a maximum weight of 10 kilos (22 lb), with exterior dimensions (length + height + width) that do not exceed 115 cm (45 inches). You may also take an additional item.

Our LifeMiles Elite members (Gold and Diamond) and Gold Star Alliance passengers travelling in Business Class, are entitled to 2 carry-ons with a maximum weight of 10 kilos (22 lb) each, with exterior dimensions (length + height + width) that do not exceed 115 cm (45 inches)*. The second piece may have maximum exterior dimensions of 118 cm (46.5 inches).

Regulations may vary depending on the country and may be modified by the authorities of each nation at any time and without notice.

For international flights, baggage that exceeds the standards on the free allowed luggage policy may incur in additional charges per additional piece depending on the region of destination.

*Excludes flights to and from the United States of America.​​

By disposition of the Aeronautical Authorities, all carry-on baggage that has the following characteristics may not be transported in the cabin and must be checked as free allowed baggage*:

  • If it exceeds the abovementioned weight and dimensions.

  • If it may not be transported in the upper compartments or under the front seat, due to irregular shape.

These restrictions may be applied after boarding. Transportation of this baggage in the same flight is not guaranteed, as it should have been presented at the counter upon check-in.

Avianca is not responsible for Items and/or carry-on baggage that does not comply with the allowed baggage Policy or that has been retained by security controls at the airport.

Important regulations for flights to the United States of America

When travelling to the United States of America, the battery of your mobile device must be fully charged before boarding. Otherwise, you may not board the plane and you must undergo additional inspection.

This requirement is part of a new regulation determined by the Transportation Security Administration.

For flights leaving the United States of America, the only carry-on baggage policy for all Passengers, with no exceptions, is one (1) 10-kilogram (22 lb) piece, with dimensions that do not exceed 115 lineal centimeters (45 inches). You may also take an additional item.

Additional allowed items

In addition to the items already mentioned as carry-on baggage you may also transport, under you care and without additional cost, any of the following items.

The size, volume and weight of the objects may not make other persons uncomfortable, obstruct emergency exits, hallways or doors, or affect the safety of the flight.

General use items

  • A coat.

  • A hat.

  • A portfolio.

  • A woman’s bag.

  • A photo or video camera.

  • Non-flammable items inflated with gas (balloons inflated with air).

  • A personal computer (laptop) in its case that only contains its accessories.

Items for special service​

In addition to general use items, you may take special service items that you may need only for personal use. If they are for a third-party, you may transport them as free allowed baggage.

Transportation of additional items is charged and handled according to current baggage policies. Check the charges for excess baggage.

  • A baby carriage (foldable) in use.

  • A personal use wheelchair.​

  • A diaper bag in use.

  • Orthopedic devices such as crutches, walkers, canes, among others.

  • Baby crib (valid only on board Airbus A330 and Boeing 787).

  • Portable Oxygen Concentrators (POC), Variable Positive Airway Pressure (VPAP) or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). Dialysis devices and their properly packed batteries.

If applicable, these items may only be transported in the plane’s haul. They must be duly packed to avoid harming the people in charge of baggage handling and to guarantee the flight’s safety.

Transportation of liquids, gels, aerosols

It is only allowed to transport liquids, gels and aerosols in small containers, with a maximum individual capacity of 100 milliliters. To facilitate inspection of the products at security checkpoints, these containers must be transported in a transparent zip lock bag with a capacity of no more than one liter and approximate size of 20 x 20 centimeters (you must procure these bags before the beginning of your trip).

Duty Free Products

Items purchased at the duty free shops (In Bond – Duty Free), whether at airports or on the aircraft, must be transported in a sealed container.

The package must have the following conditions:

  • Be tamper-proof.

  • Show satisfactory evidence that the article was acquired at the abovementioned shops.

The latter applies for Passengers departing from an airport as well as for those connecting.

The restrictions of the Control and Security Authorities vary depending on the airport at which you are. It is your responsibility to inquire with the corresponding airport authority about the restrictions and/or current regulations.

We are not responsible for items that the Control and Security Authorities at the airports may retain, seize or that may not be transported.
