What to do in Barcelona?

Barcelona 5

Hit the town

Like Madrid and Ibiza, Barcelona is a city where they party like crazy. There are 5 areas in the city with a selection of bars and clubs. The Paseo Marítimo de la Barceloneta (Barceloneta waterfront) is the most frequently touristed area, while in the Zona Alta you’ll find the city’s most exclusive clubs. In María Cubí and Santaló the party is bohemian and there’s usually live music; in the Eixample district you can start the party with a few glasses and some tapas in its bars. Finally, the Gaixample is the area where all the gay clubs are.

Take a dip at the beaches

Barcelona’s privileged location gives it access to some marvelous beaches for you to enjoy. These beaches were restored and conditioned for tourism in the 90s, and are now some of the most frequented in Europe. Their white sands and azure seas are ideal for enjoying a summer’s day. The closest and most popular beaches where you can take a nice dip in the Mediterranean waters are Barceloneta, Somorrostro, Sant Miguel and Sant Sebastiá.

Discover the traces of Gaudí

Antoni Gaudí is one of Barcelona’s most illustrious sons; his architectural creations are known worldwide and his unique style gives the Ciudad Condal a unique air. On your visit you can see the buildings conceived by this genius of architecture. You can start with La Pedrera, and then pass by Casa Batlló, two buildings considered among the most original in the world. Park Gûell is where the architect let his imagination fly, and where you can wander and discover his genius. You can finish your tour with the Sagrada Familia, the best-known and most emblematic monument in Barcelona and in the country.

Walk on Las Ramblas

Las Ramblas is the place to be in Barcelona. It is not only the city’s best-known street, but along its 0.8 mile length you can find cultural samplings, terraces where you can sit and enjoy a good meal or a drink, flower shops that flood the area with colors and scents, and shops where you can buy snacks that never miss. Enjoy the tour from the Plaza de Cataluña to the city’s old port while you appreciate and enjoy the unique feeling of the Catalans.

A dish

Escalivada

This delicacy is sure to appear on your table several times while you’re in the Ciudad Condal. This delicacy is one of the most popular typical dishes of Barcelona, and it’s normal to find it on the menu of every tapas restaurant and bar, but what is it? Escalivada is an incredible dish, with a recipe based on pimientos, eggplant, onion and tomato cooked with anchovies on top. It’s a dish with a strong flavor, but you’ll love it from the first bite.

A place

La Boquería Market

Whatever you do, don’t miss this iconic space in Barcelona for anything in the world. Located on the popular Las Ramblas, specifically on the Rambla de las Flores, this market is where the scents, colors, flavors and shapes of the city meet. In more than 300 stalls, you’ll find an immense selection of raw and cooked products that will make your mouth water. Get ready to enjoy the typical recipes of the Catalan capital, and the best regional products.

A cook

Paco Pérez

Five Michelin stars endorse this Catalan chef as one of the most important names in Barcelona’s gastronomic scene. Also considered one of the greatest exponents of 21st century Spanish avant-garde cuisine, Pérez is responsible for the success of restaurants such as Llançà, Miramar, la Enoteca del Hotel Arts, L'EGGS, Doble, La Royale and Bao bar. When you are in Barcelona you have to take advantage, and delight your senses with the cuisine of this master.

A recipe

Tumaca bread

To say that this dish is bread with tomato doesn’t do justice to the meaning this delicacy has for Catalans. This dish is perhaps the most typical in Cataluña, and so you can bring the flavor home with you, we’ll give you the recipe:

Ingredients

1 ripe tomato

1 thick slice of bread (hopefully artisanal bread)

Olive oil

A little salt

Garlic (optional)

Directions:

1. Toast the bread in an oven at 400ºF for 5 to 8 minutes.

2. Grate the tomato into a bowl and add salt and olive oil to taste. Let stand.

3. Rub the garlic on the toasted bread.

4. Spread the tomato mixture until you’ve covered the entire surface of the slice of bread.

5. You can top with serrano ham or the cold cut of your choice.

6. Enjoy!

An event

Tast a la Rambla

At the beginning of June, this must-attend event is held for those who love cooking. On the Rambla de Santa Mónica the city’s best chefs and restaurants meet to give you the opportunity to taste the best modern and traditional cuisine of the city in a festive atmosphere where each restaurant’s tasting menu is priced very low. An ideal plan for foodies who want to try a lot of the city’s restaurants without moving too much and at an unbeatable price.
