We know how much you love your pet. Fly with it for an additional fee or take your service animal for free.

How can I fly with my pet?

  • Take your dog or your cat. If you are flying within Colombia, you can transport ornamental bird in the plane’s cabin, roosters can travel in the hold as checked baggage.
  • You must have all permits and sanitary requirements from the locations of origin, connection and destinations. Please carry the sanitary inspection certificate.
  • Your four-legged friend must have a collar, leash and muzzle at the airport while it is outside of its container. It must also remain inside its bag or crate during the flight.

Where does your pet travel?


Depending on the animal’s characteristics, you may take it inside the cabin or in the plane’s hold as checked baggage.
 

        Cabin

  • Travel with your pet weighing up to 8 kilograms (18 pounds)* and with a maximum height of 20 centimeters (8 inches).
  • During the flight, the animal must remain in a bag** made of waterproof fabric and with breathing holes. If you do not have one, you can buy it with us at some airports for USD 35 plus taxes.
  • In addition to your carry-on baggage, you may only carry one additional bag with a pet.
  • While traveling, place your pet under the seat in front of you.

* This weight does not include the bag.

** Measurements should be 40.6 centimeters long + 27.9 centimeters wide + 20.3 centimeters high (length 16 inches + width 11 inches + height 8 inches).
 

        Hold

  • Travel with your pet weighing up to 20 kilograms (44 pounds) *** This weight does not include the container, on flights of up to 4 hours.
  • Your pet must weigh a maximum of 10 kilograms (22 pounds) ***This weight does not include that of the container. This weight does not include the container, for flights of up to 5 hours.
  • Regardless of the length of your flight, take your pet up to 46 kilograms (101 pounds) on the Airbus A330 or Boeing B787. This weight includes the container.
  • You can only carry a pet in a closed container. Check these conditions to avoid setbacks.
  • Find out which breeds are known as brachycephalic and we will therefore not transport for the sake of the animal’s safety.
  • Check the conditions for the transport of roosters.

Check this information before your flight
 

For the safety of your pet, keep these limitations in mind.

  • This service does not apply for reservations with our codeshare partners.
  • We do not transport live exotic birds, protected species or those in danger of extinction.
  • Dogs and cats under 8 weeks of age cannot travel. This regulation may vary depending on your destination.
  • The number of pets accepted on each aircraft is limited.
  • The service is not available on Embraer aircraft.
  • If you are traveling to and from Europe you cannot take your pet in the cabin.
  • The service is not available for flights to and from London, due to the Animal Reception Center restrictions.
  • The entry of pets and food is prohibited in Aruba and Curacao.
  • Transportation of live animals to the Galapagos Islands is not allowed.
  • By regulation of the Civil Aviation Authority of Mexico, if you are flying to and from this country, transportation of pets of brachiocephalic races in the cabin is not available. Service or emotional support dogs of races considered dangerous are also not allowed on board.

Dangerous breeds
 

  • We transport the following breeds in the hold: American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, De Presa Canario, Doberman, Dogo Argentino, Dogo de Bordeaux, Brazilian Row, Neapolitan Mastiff, Pit Bull Terrier, Rottweiler and Japanese Tosa.
  • Sanitary regulations of each country can restrict the entry of the animal. We are not liable for the actions of the sanitary authority.
  • Dogs of these breeds can travel in a container with metallic walls non-toxic materials that allow the feeding and hydration of the animal.
  • Your dog must have a basket type muzzle if it travels in a plastic container.
  • In Colombia, pursuant to article 108-E of chapter XIII of Law 746 of July 19, 2002, "the importation of canine specimens of the Staffordshire Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier breeds, or canines that are the product of cross-breeding or hybrids of these breeds ". If your pet was born in Colombia and you want to take it out of the country, you must apply for a permit to reenter.

  • It must be made with rigid materials such as fiberglass, metal or plastic.
  • It must weigh a maximum of 10 kilograms (22 pounds) and allow your pet to move freely.
  • It must be clean and leak proof.
  • The containers for water and food must be empty, separated and fixed to the container.
  • You must have access from outside to give the pet a drink, in case of an emergency or delays in the flight.
  • The exterior and interior should not have parts that can hurt your pet, people or damage the airport infrastructure.
  • Vents should be small. If they don’t please cover them with a mesh.
  • The door can be sliding or hinged and have locks. The material can be plastic, wood or metal.
  • If the container has wheels, please block them.

Restrictions

  •  We do not transport pets in containers in poor condition (rusty mesh, hinges or inoperative closures).
  • If your dog is large or aggressive, it should travel in a wooden or metal container and have 2 locks on each side of the door.
  • Containers made entirely of welded mesh or wire mesh are not allowed.
  • Take them in a container or cardboard, wood or fabric cage.
  • Only one bird per compartment can travel.
  • 2 cages with 6 roosters per traveler are allowed.
  • Containers with birds should not exceed 20 kilograms (44 pounds).
  • Charging of this service is per container.

When is it free?


When traveling with service, emotional support or rescue dogs.

Guide or assistance dogs

Please show a credential that shows that your dog is a service animal (tags, marked harness or identification card).

Emotional support dogs

You must carry a certificate of your emotional or mental disability condition. The document must be printed on letterhead, have less than one year of issue, specify the date and place where it was issued to you, the reasons why you should travel with the animal and the type of doctor's license.

Search and rescue dogs (K, B and R)

They must travel with breastplate, microchip, certificate, collar and double strap.

 

What must you do to take the service?

  • We recommend you request the service as soon as possible and until 24 hours prior to departure of your flight through our sales channels (subect to availability). At the airport, this service may be confirmed at any time fi the number of pets allowed has not been exceeded.
  • Reserve your seat in any location, except in the emergency exit row.
  • Arrive at the airport 3 hours before the departure of your domestic or international flight.
  • You must present a certificate specifying the origin with the authorization for transit and entry to the destination. It must show that your animal complies with safety and hygiene regulations.
  • ​Your dog can travel with you in the cabin and without a bag. It must remain with you for the entire duration of the flight.

Transportation of these animals is not available for these animals due to restrictions imposed by the Animal Reception Center.

  1.  On which airlines can I get this service if I book my ticket with Avianca?

    Applies only for TACA Internacional, Lacsa, TACA Peru, Avianca and Avianca Ecuador S.A. The service does not apply for reservations with partner and / or codeshare airlines.

  2. What documents should I have to travel with my pet?

    Please show a copy of your vaccination certificate. Also, carry your sanitary inspection certificate, issued by a veterinarian. The validity of this document depends on the country. You may have to comply with other conditions if the regulations at your destination require it.

  3.  What conditions must I meet to travel with my pet on connecting flights?

    If your pet weighs less than 20 kilograms, each of the segments must be a maximum of 4 hours. If your pet weighs less than 10 kilograms, each segment must be a maximum of 5 hours.

  4. What requirements must I meet to travel with my dog or cat to Colombia?

    You must have an original sanitary certificate that shows your animal is suitable to be transported. Its validity must not exceed 10 calendar days and it must state that your pet is free of infectious and parasitic diseases. It should also mention that it does not present fresh or healing wounds.

    Also, please specify the species, identification, breed, sex, age and coat of the animal. In addition, you must inform of its vaccination plan. The vaccination certificate must be issued by a veterinarian indicating his or her professional license number.

  5.  What permission must I procure to transport small birds within Colombia?

    To travel with these animals, you must request a mobilization request with the Regional Autonomous Corporation of the Black-Nare River Basins, CORNARE.

  6. How do I obtain the sanitary inspection certificate in Colombia?

    To request this certificate, you must submit a document in which a veterinarian mentions the breed, sex, age and health status of the animal. Likewise, you must attach a copy of the valid vaccination certificate. Keep in mind that you must also take your pet for inspection.

  7.  What is the validity of the health inspection certificate in Colombia?

    In the case of ICA, this document is valid for 24 hours.

  8. What documents should I submit when traveling to Spain with a dog or a cat?

    - Take the European passport for the transport of pets (vaccination certificate). It must be issued by a veterinarian and be endorsed by the competent authority. The document must establish that the animal has a rabies vaccine and, if necessary, complies with the preventive sanitary measures.

    - Identify your pet with your name and address.

    - Dogs and cats must be identified with electronic systems (transponder). This is a passive radio-frequency identification and reading device. It must comply with ISO 11784, use HDX or FDX-B technology and be readable by a device compatible with this standard. If you do not have one of these electronic systems, you must provide the form in which the identifier will be read.

  9. What certificates should I process if I travel with my pet to Panama?

    You must have the animal's health certificate, issued by the health authority of the place of origin. It must be authenticated in the country of origin by the Panamanian consul.

    If your animal is a small species, you must present the export certificate issued by the health authority of the country of origin. It must state that the animal has been vaccinated against rabies.

  10.   How long in advance should I notify the arrival of my pet to Panama?

    You must notify of its arrival 3 days in advance. Please fill out the application form for Home Quarantine. Request it by writing to the email cam@minsa.gob.pa.

  11.  On what days and at what times can my pet enter Panama?

    Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. at 11:00 p.m. During these hours, the Quarantine Department of Panama, in charge of controlling the entry of pets into that country, is available at the Tocumen International Airport.

    Pets are not accepted on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays, but your animal will remain in the kennels of this airport. In this case, a veterinarian from the Quarantine Department should be contacted. The service has a cost of USD 130 per animal and must be paid in cash. If for any reason you cannot pay this value, you must leave the pet in the Quarantine Department until Monday or until the next business day.

  12.  What requirements should I meet if I fly with my pet to Peru?

    You must present the health certificate and the vaccination certificate of the animal, issued by the College of Health Doctors. This last document must have the blue format.

  13.  Can I travel with my four-legged friend from or to the Galapagos Islands?

    If you travel from Baltra or San Cristóbal to another destination in Ecuador, you can take your pet. If you fly to any of these islands, you cannot take your animal.

  14.   What should I know if I want to travel with my pet to Isla Margarita?

    If you fly to Porlamar with your dog or cat and of more than 4 months of age, you must present your rabies vaccination certificate. This document must be issued by a veterinarian and its validity must be one year.
