Every action is an opportunity to build a more sustainable future
Through over 24 initiatives focused on fleet management and rigorous fuel conservation efforts by our pilots and crew, we avoided emitting 71,256 tons of CO₂ in 2023.
With the incorporation of A320 NEO aircraft into our fleet, we can achieve 20% fuel savings and lower CO₂ emissions compared to the previous generation fleet, according to the manufacturer. In 2023, we included 21 NEO aircraft into our fleet.
By reconfiguring 103 of our aircraft, we increased the capacity of our planes by 20% and have reduced CO₂ emissions per passenger transported by 15.35% compared to a non-reconfigured aircraft.
Between 2017 and 2023, we offset 4,517,416 tons of CO₂, which according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is equivalent to the consumption of 9,478,705 barrels of oil. This was accomplished through environmental projects aimed at reforesting and restoring degraded areas, as well as promoting renewable energy generation, among others.
Thanks to our voluntary carbon emission offset platform for passengers and employees, with Chooose, 87.53 tons of CO₂ were offset, equivalent to planting 1,970 trees. All of this through projects such as "Conservation of the coast of Guatemala" or "Delfines Cupica Redd+" in the Chocó region. Learn more about these projects at avianca-chooose.
We report our climate change management to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). In 2023, we obtained a management level score (B), higher than the global average score, making us one of the best airlines in Latin America.
We generated 763,225 kWh of solar energy, equivalent to 30% of the energy consumed at the MRO, used to support aircraft maintenance operations at those facilities.
We have an environmental management system certified under the ISO 14001:2015 standard and ratified by IQNET, which allows us to demonstrate avianca's commitment to continuously improving the environmental performance of the organization.
Thanks to the commitment of the entire organization, the certified stations are Rionegro, Quito, Guayaquil, El Salvador, and Bogotá, for the following processes:
● Aircraft Maintenance and Repair.
● Ground Support Equipment.
● Administrative Center and Operational Excellence Center.
We take pride in supporting environmental projects. In 2023, we organized four environmental volunteer events in our main operating countries: Colombia, El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Ecuador, focused on ecosystem protection. These efforts led to the planting of 872 native trees and the release of over 200 sea turtles. A total of 170 volunteers participated in these initiatives.
For avianca, environmental care is a priority. We are inspired to see how our efforts for the environment translate into tangible actions, and this is just the beginning. We embrace the challenge of continuing to contribute to the well-being of our planet. Together, we will fly towards a greener and more sustainable future!
Thanks to partnerships with strategic environmental managers, we have managed to transform non-hazardous waste generated into raw materials for the creation of furniture, cardboard boxes, new glass containers, egg trays, among others. This initiative is benefiting waste pickers, single mothers from the Puerta de Oro Recyclers Association and Planeta Verde in Colombia, and patients from the children's area of the Hermano Miguel Foundation in Ecuador.
We conducted a circular economy consultancy with our partner Waste 2 Worth, with the aim of identifying improvements in our processes regarding the use of packaging in onboard services and VIP lounges, seeking more sustainable materials in the market to replace them, thus focusing on circular economy models.
11,843 kg of waste (cardboard, paper, glass, and plastic) generated by the Ecoventura tourist operation in the Galapagos Islands were transported thanks to the alliance between avianca cargo and Ecoventura, with the aim of combating waste pollution on the Island and contributing to the conservation of this strategic ecosystem in the region.
In 2023, we managed to send 44% of non-hazardous waste generated for recovery, avoiding approximately 447 tons of waste from reaching landfills, and 87% (379 tons) of hazardous waste generated were sent for recycling, recovery, and/or refining processes.
Our partnerships with environmental managers have created a positive social impact, benefiting waste pickers, single mothers, and pediatric patients.
We support Puntos Verdes, a social program by environmental manager LITO; contributing 24 tons of electronic waste. These materials were invested in the "Banco de Hilos" project, which equipped five food canteens for Wayuu communities in the upper Guajira.
The recovered waste is transformed into raw materials to produce new items, including:
● Cardboard boxes
● Toys
● Product packaging
● Insulating fillings
● Glass bottles
