What types of animals can fly?

Dogs and cats. Make sure to review the conditions that must be met before and during the flight.

Emotional support dogs

They are dogs that accompany their owner due to an emotional condition.

  • Weight: If it weighs up to 10 kg (22 lb), including the container, it can fly in the cabin. If it weighs up to 70 kg (154 lb), including the container, it must fly in the hold.
  • Container: For the cabin, you need a flexible container (22x14x10 in). And for the hold, a rigid container.
  • Quantity: You may fly with a maximum of one (1) emotional support dog.

Service dogs

They are dogs trained in specialized and certified centers.

  • Weight: Service dogs are accepted regardless of their weight or size, as long as they can be placed in the cabin without obstructing evacuation routes.
  • Container: They do not require the use of a container to be transported in the cabin.
  • Quantity: Up to two (2) service dogs per passenger may fly in the cabin.

Pets in the cabin (Max. 10 kg/22 lb including the container)

They are dogs or cats that have an additional charge to be transported
in the cabin.

  • Weight:They have a maximum weight of 10kg (22 lb), including the container.
  • Container: They must fly in a flexible container of maximum 22x14x10 in. (length, width, and height).
  • Quantity: You may fly with a maximum of one (1) pet and, during the flight,
    it must be placed under the front seat in front of you.

Pets in the hold (Max. 70 kg/154 lb including the container)

Dogs or cats that have an additional charge to be transported
in the hold.

  • Weight: They have a maximum weight of 70 kg (154 lb), including the container.
  • Container: They must fly in a rigid container that allows free movement within it.
  • Quantity: If you fly with more than one pet, please note that each pet must travel in its container.

Documents required

Complete the form for transporting pets, and take into account other considerations.

Before the flight

You must book this service, as applicable; up to 48 hours prior
to flight departure.

The day of the flight

You must be at the airport at least 2 hours before your flight departure.
  • Your pet or emotional support dog will not be able to fly with you in the cabin if you are traveling in Business Class on our B787 aircraft.
  • Transporting live animals to the Galapagos Islands is not permitted.
  • Due to Animal Reception Centre restrictions, this service is not available for flights to the United Kingdom. 
  • This service is not available for flights to/from Aruba and Curação. The only exception is for permanent moves to the island of Curação with the relevant authorization from the relevant authority. 
  • The service does not apply to bookings with affiliated airlines or airlines with codeshare agreements.
  • The pet transport service applies for TACA International, Avianca Costa Rica, Avianca Peru, Avianca and Avianca Ecuador S.A.
